A survey from 2022 revealed that 87%of people believed that listening to music was an important factor in maintaining mental health, that 65% of people listened to music everyday and that 83% listened to music more than they watched films.
Since music is such an important part of people's lives, we have put together the opportunities that visitors to Torquay and The English Riviera have for experiencing music. From tribute bands to West End musicals, from music legends to music festivals, there is something for everyone.
The Electric Bay Music Festival is without doubt the main music festival of the year for the English Riviera. It takes place on 13th and 14th July on Torre Abbey Meadow on The seafront in Torquay and celebrates "electronic music". The superb location makes it very easy to get to on foot, by public transport or by car. This is a well run family friendly music and dance festival which has been running for a number of years.
A smaller scale festival that celebrates up and coming artists is the Burn it Down Festival that takes place on 30th and 31st August at The Foundry in Torwood Street in Torquay. On the 18th May they also have their Emofest.
The Kaiser Chiefs will be appearing at The Riviera Centre on 11th April in a tour which coincides with the launch of their new album "Kaiser Chiefs' Easy Eighth Album". Jake Bugg's Your Town Tour 2024 hits Torquay on 3rd May (at The Foundry).
For those whose musical tastes stretch back a little further David Essex is appearing at the Princess Theatre on 5th September.
Meanwhile, legendary folk group Steeleye Span are appearing at The Palace Theatre in Paignton on 13th May celebrating their 55th anniversary.
Musical Theatre is an enormously popular way to experience live music and The English Riviera is extremely lucky in having a venue that supports this type of larger production.
The Princess Theatre on Torquay seafront is hosting a great range of shows this year including touring productions of massive West End Hits such as Blood Brothers on 19th March to 23rd March, An Officer and a Gentleman The Musical between 2nd July and 6th July, the award winning re-imagined production of Jesus Christ Superstar form 16th July to 20th July, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from 6th to 11th August and Sister Act from 26th August to 31st August.
For lovers of Opera, Madama Butterfly appears on 16th February and Bizet's Carmen is being performed on 17th April.
And finally, for fans of artists who for various reasons can't get to see their favourite performers there is a whole host of tribute acts with performances throughout the year. Some of these are packaged within bios of the artists' lives.
The Princess Theatre has the Simon and Garfunkel Story on 2nd February, UK Pink Floyd Experience on 14th March and Barry Steele and Friends - The Roy Orbison Story on 29th March.
Meanwhile, over at the Babbacombe Theatre on Babbacombe Downs, the year is full of tribute acts of various kinds. The following are just some of the acts appearing: an ABBA tribute is first off the blocks The Winner Takes It All ABBA Tribute on on 14th February, there is Take That Everything Changes on 30th March, Money for Nothing Dire Straits on 12th April and Cloudbursting - The music of Kate Bush on 13th April.
The Foundry on Torquay Harbourside also has some tribute acts including Ultimate Cold Play 11th May, Daft Funk Live on 15th June and Fleetwood Bac on 15th November.
