People often talk about staying in an AirBnB as if it is a type of accommodation in its own right. You have hotels, guest houses, self catering and then airbnbs.
The reality is that airbnb is just an online platform that allows anyone with a property to advertise on it. When it begain in San Fransisco it was intended for people who wanted to let our spare rooms. As time has gone by though, huge numbers of professional and full time accommodation providers have come to use the platform and so it is now a real jumble of different types of accommodation.
One of the early attractions of it from the point of view property owners was that it only charged a commission of 3% whilst its competitors such as Booking.com were charging 15%. All that has now changed and despite the corporate waffle, Airbnb has moved away from its slightly hippy roots and is a ruthless multi national conglomerate determined to achieve market domination and they charge as much as 18% commission.
Our properties feature on AirBnB and as Superhosts we have preferential exposure on the site. We use AirBnB as we use sites such as Booking.com and VRBO to advertise. These sites simply give us access to guests who might not otherwise find us.
However, from the point of view of guests it is always better to visit our own website and book direct as we offer cheaper rates - after all if you book direct we don't have to pay anyone commission.
And for our guests who book direct we offer additional early booking discounts or late deals discounts. And on top of that, guests who have stayed before get returning guest discounts. There is also the additional benefit of being able to opt in to our Booking Protect Refund Protection cover.
